Growing up, Joey has no gay role models. In the dim light of the early 1960s, Joey only knew what he picked up on the streets, at magazine stands, and in public restrooms. In his senior year in high school, he falls in love with Ross, a beautiful athletic “straight guy.” But once in college, his love life takes a turn.

Ike, a flamboyant college freshman, turns Joey on to gay sex and the newly formed gay lib movement. But things don’t go well for Joey, and he fumbles through a few one-night stands and semi-relationships. After nearly losing Ike to a gay bashing, Joey gives up on love and turns his motorcycle toward New Orleans and the French Quarter, where he moves in with his bohemian cousin, Judy.

Joey likes the gay scene in the Quarter but he is lonely, missing intimacy, and flails through life. The sexual nights in the French Quarter aren’t enough to satisfy his real needs -- but his resourceful cousin magically opens the door for him to have the best of both worlds.

I'M biased, but this paperback is great, both in the way it feels--a sturdy and rather thick book--and in the way it reads. A great love story from a time when things were all new and gays were inventing the new culture which has blossomed into todays world.

Two Loves Jacob Campbell 9781508967613 Books Reviews

There was a time, in literature, when, if a male character was involved in a homosexual experience, the reader could pretty much expect him to suffer a dire consequence, like suicide.

Beginning in the 1960’s, the halcyon days of gay pulp fiction, when, as Chad Stuart and several other pseudonyms, I was writing gay novels for publishers like Greenleaf Classics and Grove Press, male characters were not only allowed gay sex, and plenty of it, but they were saved from dire punishment from On-High, and/or from down-to-Earth legal authorities.

In this day and age, most male-male books are not only written by women but read mainly by women (go figure!); therefore, a protagonist is expected to shun promiscuity and strive for true love and monogamy with a lengthy courtship ritual and a happy-ever-after Harlequin-House like ending.

Jacob Campbell’s third book, TWO LOVES, which is set in the 1960’s and is, once again, based loosely upon the author’s autobiographical experiences, is difficult to classify. On the one hand, women readers please note, the protagonist, Joey, seems intent upon finding true love — and seemingly discovers just that, not once but twice. In fact, I’ve never before read such lengthy and varied dissertations on the emotions and feelings resulting from the “love” experience. On the other hand, Joey has an inherent promiscuous side, and a penchant for novels of the time, like John Rechy’s CITY OF NIGHT, which, like much of the literature of that day, eschews the monogamous in favor of the promiscuous no emotional attachments, down-and-dirty sex, of the hustler’s money-for-sex life-style.

Much of TWO LOVES is the main character’s angst-ridden inner battle between monogamy and promiscuity, his sexual identity skewed, as are the main characters in Campbell’s other two novels, by traumatic experiences with pederastic Catholic priests and the homosexuality rampant in one particular Catholic seminary.

I won’t spoil the ending by saying which side wins the battle when our hero finds himself in the sin-city of New Orleans (where Campbell’s second novel, FRENCH QUARTER KNGHTS, entirely takes place). Suffice it to say (did I mention, this book is hard to classify?), Joey and this book’s readers experience, in getting there, one hell of an up-and-down, round-and-round emotional roller-coaster ride, including a whole lot of the protagonist’s weeping.
I'M biased, but this paperback is great, both in the way it feels--a sturdy and rather thick book--and in the way it reads. A great love story from a time when things were all new and gays were inventing the new culture which has blossomed into todays world.
