Flyer is a really well written historical novel. The main character, Jack, runs away from an abusive father and pins his hopes on one day being able to fly planes. He sets off on a wing and a prayer and develops into a crack pilot who's a complete natural in the cockpit. The writing is rich and filled with with interesting historical facts about both the flyers and how they came to be so important in WWI. The author seemlessly blends actual historical figures with her fictional creations.I would recommend Flyer to anyone who loves historical fiction, anyone who is interested in the history of early aviation, and anyone who loves great writing. Flyer is a well developed novel that leaves you thinking about the main character long after the last written word on the page. I look forward to more from this author.

Judith is one of my favorite novelists. This is the second book I have read by her. Her characters are deliciously alive and interesting. Her style of writing is up close and intimate. The Flyer is a good read, heartwarming, and comfortable. At the same time it is engaging, and exciting. Sort of like curling up in front of the fireplace in your robe and fuzzy slippers, Then digging into a bowl of deep fried, jalepeno chili peppers. Yum. Definitely not boring.
A good, absorbing read, taking you back to another time, another generation. The research involved in this book is of thesis quality.
What a fantastic coming of age story. Well researched and told in elegant prose, this novel is hard to put down. I was rooting for Jack from the beginning, and by the end of the novel I really cared about him. The way the author takes us from his boyhood, through his training, and eventually his participation in the war effort makes for an exciting, edge of your seat read. The character development is superb and the gripping emotional content kept me turning the pages.

Love the story and setting
Great story! Fast paced action. Characters really come to life. Great attention to detail as to the planes of the times and how they were developed. Not just another war story but an adventure of a young man fulfilling his dream to become an aviator. A must read for anyone into historical novels. Writing flows smoothly throughout the book, making it a no put down read from start to finish. Readers should not be disappointed with this one.
Since I previously proof read this book, I KNOW it is a real page-turner. If you enjoy novels that incorporate historical events and with characters easy to identify with, FLYER is a "must read". Even if you are not an aviation buff, you'll enjoy the heart-warming story and WWI action. it's the kind of book you hope will be a movie some day.
The book begins in 1912. A likeable young man escapes his abusive father and hops a train to pursue his dream of becoming an aviator. He is a match for his quest. He displays skill, intelligence, and moxie, all of which serve him well as he grows into manhood. In WWI, he travels to England and aids the nation's fight against the Germans. He becomes a hero. Flyer is a story requiring a masterful hand, and that is what it receives. The writer makes the protagonist and all the other characters believable. She effectively places the reader in the story's scenes, times, and places. The dialogue and period slang feel authentic. The book is one to be saved on the bookshelf and taken down months later to be re-read.
