I read this book in one sitting. I laughed, I cried, but mostly I marveled at how many lives (pets and people) John’s work touched and enhanced. In full disclosure, I attended high school with John and found out about his book from one of our classmates.John’s book went beyond what I’d expected, as it was not just another wonderful collection of James Herriot tales of a vet’s life. It was this, therefore the laughing and the crying, but it also made me aware as to the effects that big business can have upon the quality of life for those of us who love our pets almost as much as we love our kids. It also impressed upon me how important it is to stay informed about our pet’s health and to do the research necessary regarding the options that may be available.
Valuable information interspersed with heartwarming stories of living a meaningful life.

Putting Your Pet First John S Sleasman 9781942661269 Books Reviews
A truly interesting and entertaining book. A look behind the scenes of veterinary medicine and, in this case, the personal qualities of the practitioner. The balance of the details of Dr. Sleasman's education, he and his wife setting up their practice, and the anecdotes of the animals that he treated is near perfect. I'm glad I had the good fortune to come across this book and copies will definitely be sent as gifts to our friends with pets.
John Sleasman has written a wonderful book on how the perspective of pet care has changed through the years and how we can be better pet owners through the thoughtful suggestions of how we make decisions in their care. I was amazed at the variety of animals he cared for and how well he adapted to the changing tide of pet ownership. I'm planning on sharing the book with a friend who is currently in veterinary school so she can get guidance in her own future practice. A very good read
A short but fascinating read. Dr. Sleasman answered many of the questions and concerns I've had over the years, especially in regards to the veterinarian's perspective of pet care and caring. He convinced me of the need to specialize, not solely as a means to bring in more money (as I supposed), but to give my pet the best care possible. I was amazed to learn about procedures such as eye care that I didn't even know existed. Sharing his background and how he developed and realized his dream of becoming a veterinarian added interest and credibility to the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves and cares about animals.
Written by a vet who is truly dedicated to helping animals live a better life. It was a pleasure to read his first hand stories from the area I grew up in around Silverdale, Washington. John treated pets, farm animals and a few exotics which makes it all the more interesting. The stories of delivering a dozen Saint Bernard pups and fitting a goose with a new beak especially touched my heart.
I recommend this book to anyone who cares for animals and wants to read about one man's efforts to make a difference for the good in our world. It would make a great gift for yourself or friends.
This book is for those of you who love their pets. It will make you laugh and cry; it also will help you to make the right choices when it comes to choosing who to care for your pet (s). A good vet treats your animal, a great vet loves your pets and cares for their health as much as you do. An inspiring book of how and why Dr. Sleasman became a veterinarian, some great stories on some of his patients, the innovative ideas for helping them, and how the treatment of animals and pets started and changed over the years.
John Sleasman, DVM has put his heart and soul into this beautifully entertaining and informative book, just as he put his heart and soul into his veterinary practice for 40 years. His dedication, love and hard work touched so many lives, pet as well as human. He saved and improved the lives of many of my own pets. He built his practice using old fashioned ethics and modern techniques, constantly updating those techniques with the times. This book is an excellent read. I couldn't stop until I'd finished!
As you said in your preface, this book shares your veterinary "journey and perspective" and provides the reader with much food for thought regarding selecting the best care for our pets. Thank you Dr. Sleasman!
Sleasman writes a genuine, heartfelt memoir of his years as a small-town veterinarian-- the general practitioner of the animal world-- in a time when there were no specialists to handle the unusual cases. He speaks with refreshing honesty about how his own value for animals changed from childhood days in the 1950s, shooting birds and squirrels, to ultimately developing a reverence for all life. He talks about the evolution in human attitudes towards animals, from a time when animals were simply commodities to today when for lots of us they are family members. He shares stories of many poignant moments with clients and their beloved pets, middle-of-the-night emergencies, innovative procedures that saved animals' eyesight and even their lives. He became a highly successful veterinarian with three clinics in his small western Washington county, but clearly never lost sight of his mission, to provide extraordinary care to the animals who came into his practice. Finally he addresses the dramatic changes since large corporations have taken over the veterinary industry and what that means to you and me in escalating costs for the care of our animals. This is a small book but it is one well worth reading.
